Stuff for Display At the CMWC

Art Gallery and Multi-Media Pavilions:
If you wish to have something displayed at one of the various galleries, send us some photos of your work for consideration. Write a list of details including the sizes of each piece, any particular display requirements, (such as layout for example), and anything else you want to tell us about your work.

If you have any poetry you wish to read or any video to show about anything or other type of live performance, send us a sample. Give us some helpful information like total length of time and the kind of equipment you might need.

Bands:
If you wish to perform at the 98 CMWC, please send us a demo tape and some background on your band and your attachment to the courier community.

THE FULL DOPE
-This message is addressed to anyone who is planning to compete in
the Cycle Messenger World Championships here in D.C. this September and
plans to either show some art, bring poetry/literature, show video, or
whatnot (!keep reading, even if you aren't an 'artist'! this applies to
everyone). We are looking forward to having a great space for the show
this year, very close to the race course. It is a large space, but not a
warehouse, so we need to know how much stuff we can expect. This message
is a call for YOUR WORK, or at least descriptions of your work. Please
DUPLICATE, TRANSLATE, and PASS ON this message as necessary.
We are looking for two basic kinds of Courier Culture to represent:
-1) Original work by bike messengers worldwide. This includes
paintings, photos, prints, etc., all 2-D media; plus sculpture, reliefs,
video, performance art, or anything else you care to think up, and of
course your writings. This work can be on any subject and will not be
edited for quality; we are only interested in representing what's out
there. Anything especially large, bulky, or awkward which presents
special problems in transporting, storing or showing we will need to
know about AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We intend to hang this work in a
gallery-type setting in several rooms, except for the text stuff, which
we hope to collect in a Xerox anthology of some sort, and likewise the
video.
-2) "Other"- We are also interested in other, 'non-art' examples of
the worldwide courier scene, such as alleycat race flyers, numbers or
manifests or trophies, t-shirts, posters, work I.D.'s or manifests, maps
of your hometown, whatever you got. These things will be collected with
the intention of displaying them on one huge wall of street-level
culture, a Cycle Messenger "Wall of Fame". Most likely we will hang this
all at once, with all contributors participating in the installation of
the "Wall".
The second category we don't really need to know about in advance,
just show up with it and we will install it en masse in the artspace.
The first category, though, we want to hear about before it comes to
D.C., if possible, so send us the attached form or use it as a guideline
to respond by E-mail. We want to have the art show ready to go on the
4th of September. If you are bringing work into town with you just
before or the day of the race, let us know as soon as you can what you
are bringing and when we can expect it and we will do what we can to get
it in there.
PLEASE RESPOND TO THE APPROPRIATE ADDRESS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE
WORK ITSELF SHOULD BE HERE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 4TH, 1998. Text and video
works should just be sent ahead, as soon as you can; we will be
collecting these to anthologize and present at the CMWC. Anything else,
try to contact us before you send it (or at least before we receive it),
but it is most important that the work just gets here before the 4th.
To send a preliminary response, with a description of your work, you
can:
    -Send e-mail to:
    -Send regular mail to:
-SHIP ARTWORK TO THIS ADDRESS, AS WELL. If you want to send "Wall of
Fame" objects ahead, you send those here also.

CMWC '98 Art Show: Participant form:
    NAME:__________________________________________________________

    HOME CITY:_____________________________________________________

    CONTACT INFO:__________________________________________________

WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING TO CMWC'98?:______________________________

____________________________________________________________________

Please describe your work in physical terms, i.e., its dimensions.
Indicate whether it has any special requirements for installation or
display. If you are bringing more than one piece, describe each one. You
can send us photos if you want, but it isn't necessary. DON'T send us
images by e-mail, please. Bear in mind that everybody gets at least one
spot, but no one is guaranteed more than one, so be sensible about the
amount of work you bring here. People who bring small-format work are
more likely to get multiple works shown than those who bring large
pieces. Also be aware that YOU are responsible for transporting your
stuff here and back.
Anything sent ahead should ABSOLUTELY be tagged with the owner's
name and contact/address info, on the work itself if possible. We will
take responsibility for hanging the work once it is here, as well as
ensuring that it is taken care of until you take it home. If you need
help making arrangements to ship it back home while you are here,
contact us and we will help you out.
A word about security: we will do everything we can to make sure
that your stuff is kept safe while it is here, and the show will be
staffed for this purpose. You can help us, though, by making sure that
whatever you send is clearly marked with your name and contact info.
Also note that, especially with a mass display of courier life like we
want to do with the 'Wall', it will be hard to keep track of individual
pieces. So don't bring anything to put on the Wall'o'Fame that you
absolutely can't bear to lose, and again, tag anything you do bring so
that there are no questions of propriety. OK? Any questions, call us, or
e-mail to the above address. You can reach John Whittington (CMWC art
guy)here in D.C. by phone at 202-265-6647(h), or 202-265-1564(w); or
Edra London (CMWC art girl) at 202-265-1671. You can leave messages for
either one of us at the District of Columbia Bicycle Couriers
Association/Cycle Messenger World Championships office at 202-333-1150.
E-mail sent to www.dccourier.com and flagged RE:art show will also be
forwarded to the right people.
ONE FINAL NOTE: Due to hecticness and general insanity here in the
sweltering heat of the fetid swamp known as "D.C.", this message is
going out late. Much later, in fact, than originally intended, so TIME
IS OF THE ESSENCE. Please respond with all deliberate speed. THANK YOU.
SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER!!!
