| About the CMWC
The Cycle Messenger World Championships were born in 1993 in Berlin, and have been held annually since in: London, Toronto, San Francisco and Barcelona, respectively. The CMWC is more than a sporting event, it is a festival celebrating the international cycle messenger industry and its distinct culture. In addition to the scheduled athletic competition, CMWC'98 will feature a mixed media art pavilion showcasing the myriad artistic talents of messengers world-wide. Above all, the weekend will provide an opportunity for the meanest and greenest messengers from around the world to come together and compete on the streets of one of the world's premier centers of information brokerage. The championship race itself will take place in the heart of downtown Washington, DC, along some of the same streets DC's local messengers work on every day. The race will be designed to simulate the work environment of the bike messenger on a physically demanding course, testing timing and navigating skills specific to cycle messengering. Two days of qualifying heats will reduce an expected field of 800 competitors down to the world's fastest one hundred cycle messengers for the final showdown. Other scheduled events include the bunny-hop competition, sprints, cargo& team-relay races, and the crowd pleasing trials competition. We have selected the Labor Day weekend of September 4-7, for the CMWC'98. This holiday traditionally closes out the summer in North America. We also feel that the significance of this particular holiday is appropriate for celebrating a hard working segment of the working class, individuals who, in the most literal sense of the word, labor for a living. CMWC'98 promises to be a gritty and colorful celebration of the international urban bicycle messenger community. Whether competing, spectating, or using the venue to promote an image to those who are, the Cycle Messenger World Championships will deliver an exciting weekend you won't forget! Please join us for this unique occasion. |
