CMWC 98 RACE RULES

TIMBUK2
RACES:  Sprints, Cargo, Main, Fixed Gear, Team Relay, Bunny Hop, &
Trials.

Helmets must be worn by all competitors during all events.  Riding on the course without a helmet will result in disqualification.

All riders must be sober in order compete in any of the events. Intoxicated riders will be not be allowed to race.

RACES:  Main, Sprints, Cargo, Bunny Hop, Trials, Fixed Gear, & Team Relay.

MAIN RACE, QUALIFICATION HEATS: (800 riders maximum)

Qualifying heats for the main race will take place on Saturday and Sunday, (Sept. 5 & 6) from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and be run as time trial fashion, with two riders starting every 30 seconds.  Every rider must race on both days, and the combined time from the two days will determine who qualifies for the finals.  The top 80 men and the top 40 women will advance to the finals on Monday.  Each qualifying heat can be expected to last approximately 20-35 minutes in duration, and will require riders to complete a manifest given to them, by delivering parcels, making routing decisions, and navigating obstacles on the course.  At the start, riders will have to run to their locked bikes from a distance of approximately 50 feet (20 meters).  It will be necessary for all bikes to have at least one wheel secured to the frame at the start.  Riders will be required to check in at the staging area 5 minutes prior to their start times, which will be assigned to them upon final registration.  In the staging area riders will be given their individual manifests which will list a series of pick up and delivery addresses.  The pick-ups must be made in the order specified; however the deliveries may be made in any order.  To finish, riders must take their completed manifests to the finish line and present it to the Finish Line Checkpoint Marshall.  Race times will be measured from the time that a rider is scheduled to start until the time when they turn in their manifest to the Finish Marshall.  If a rider shows up late for their qualifying heat, their time will still begin when originally scheduled, and the rider will be sent on the course when they arrive.  Parcels may range in size from small envelopes to shoe boxes.  Going outside of the specified lanes of the racecourse at any time during a heat, or going the wrong way on the course will result in disqualification.  If a rider drops something and wishes to go back to retrieve it, they must place their bikes to the side of the road and run back, yielding right-of-way to oncoming bicycle traffic.  Riders will not get their manifests stamped at the checkpoints without their bikes, however they will be permitted to run with their bicycles, in the direction of the race course if they desire.  If a rider misses a checkpoint, they may not reverse direction or turn around.  Returning on foot will not be allowed.  At the lock-up checkpoint riders will be required to physically lock their bikes to the street barricades provided at the checkpoint.

MAIN RACE, FINAL ROUND: (80 men & 40 women)

For the finals, the top 80 men and 40 women will be lined up together in 12 rows of 10, according to their qualifying times, with the fastest qualifiers being positioned furthest forward.  The riders’ bikes will be also be placed into 12 rows of 10, and riders will be required to run to them from a distance of approximately 50 feet (20 meters).  It will be necessary for the bikes to have a lock securing at least one wheel to the frame at the start.  There will be 8 rounds of competition in the finals, and to advance to each consecutive round, riders must finish among the top of their respective divisions.  The 10 slowest men and five slowest women will be eliminated after each round, until there are only 10 men and 5 women left to decide the World Champions.  Upon arrival at the staging area, all riders will be handed their first manifest, very similar to those used in the qualifying rounds, specifying a number of pick ups and deliveries.  Again, the pick-ups may be made in any order, but the deliveries must be made in the order specified.

SPRINTS, QUALIFICATION HEATS: (800 riders maximum)

A qualifying lane will be left open next to the course all day Saturday, where riders can go to post a time at their leisure.  Each rider will be given only one opportunity to post a time.  Riders sprint against the clock, with the fastest 100 men and 40 women advancing to the quarterfinal rounds on Sunday.  Riders will be allowed to start in a track stand position with both feet in the pedals, however they may not receive any outside assistance to keep their balance.

SPRINTS, QUARTERFINAL & SEMI FINAL ROUNDS: (100 men & 40 women)

The sprint finals will be run in heats, with 10 riders in each.  Riders will be assigned specific lanes to race in which they may not ride out of.  Going outside of the lane will result in disqualification.

Men:  QUARTERFINALS - 100 riders, 10 heats, and top 5-riders/heat advance.
  SEMI FINALS - 50 riders, 5 heats, and top 2 riders/heat advance.

Women: QUARTERFINALS - 40 riders, 4 heats, and top 5 riders/heat advance.
  SEMI FINALS - 20 riders, 2 heats, and top 5 riders/heat advance.

SPRINTS, FINAL ROUND: (Monday, 11:30am - 11:50am)

The sprint finals will be run in the same manner as the quarter and semi final rounds.  There will be 10 racers in each of the final heats, and riders must remain in the lanes assigned to them.

CARGO: (150 riders maximum)

This event will test each rider’s ability to manage large and cumbersome loads.  The race will be run in heats. The top riders in each heat will advance to the finals.  Riders will be given a manifest with a list of pick up addresses, detailing the parcels that must be picked up at each.  The parcels may include items such as bricks, poster tubes, street pylons, kegs of beer, large boxes, and balloons.  Riders will be allowed to make the pick ups in any order they chose, and may use any means necessary to deliver the parcels to the finish.  Once all parcels are picked up, the rider must deliver them intact to the finish.  Men and women race together in this event but will have separate results posted.

BUNNYHOP: (100 riders maximum)

This event is very similar to the standard high jump competition in track and field, except that the bicycle must accompany the rider over the bar while jumping.  The height of the bar will start at 3 inches (1 inch is approximately equal to 2 1/2 centimeters) and will be raised in 3 inch increments until the bar reaches 18 inches (1 1/2 feet).  At 18 inches, the bar will continue to be raised in 2 inch increments until it reaches 30 inches (2 1/2 feet). After that, the bar will be raised in 1-inch increments.  Each rider will have 3 attempts to clear each height and will not be allowed to pass on any of the heights.  If a rider fails to clear a particular height 3 times, they will be eliminated.  In the case of a tie within the top 5, the riders’ combined number of misses will be calculated, and the rider with the fewest misses will win.

MODIFIED MESSENGER TRIALS: (50 riders maximum)

An obstacle course will be constructed using objects commonly found in an urban environment (i.e.: cars, trash cans, tires, benches, stairs, etc.).  Each rider will be given 3, 60 second runs on the course during which they will be given free roam of the obstacles.  Of the 3 runs during qualifying, the lowest of the three scores will be discarded, and the top 2 scores will be added together to determine advancement.  The top 3 riders after the preliminary round will advance to the finals, where they will each get 3, 2 minute runs.  Again, the lowest score will be discarded, and the top two scores combined will determine the winner.  Riders will be judged on a scale of 1 to 10 by a panel of experienced and international bike freaks in 3 categories, with 30 being the highest possible score for any single run.  The categories will be: Degree of Difficulty, Dabs, and Originality.
Degree of difficulty will be measured based on the moves and tricks the rider performs.
Dabs will measure the number of times a rider puts a foot down or falls off of their bike.  The fewer dabs, the higher the score.
Originality will measure the rider’s creativity in choosing a line through the obstacle course.

FIXED GEAR COMPETITIONS: Note: only the TOP THREE overall fixed gear riders will recieve points towards the individual overall.
FIXED GEAR, SKID COMPETITION: (90 riders maximum)

This event will be restricted to riders on fixed gear track bikes.  A line will mark a specific point across the street, which will act as the measuring point from where riders must commence skidding.  The rear tire must be fully locked up by the time the front tire crosses the measuring line.  Failure to do so will result in a “fault”.  Each fault will be counted as a failed attempt.  A total of 3 attempts will be given to each rider.  The rider with the longest skid wins.

FIXED GEAR, PRECISION STOP COMPETITION: (90 riders maximum)

This event will also be restricted to riders on fixed gear track bikes.  Riders will be rolled down a specially built ramp and be measured on the distance it takes them to come to a complete stop.  Riders must remain seated and may not skid their bikes until they reach the measuring line at the bottom of the ramp.  Each rider will have three attempts, and the rider able to stop, without falling over, in the shortest distance wins.

FIXED GEAR, TRACKSTAND “CIRCLE OF DEATH” COMPETITION: (150 riders maximum)

This event will also be restricted to riders on fixed gear bikes.  Riders will spread themselves out within a specified circular area, and will be timed on how long they are able to maintain their balance.  When a rider looses their balance, they will be eliminated from the circle.  Riders must remain within their own “personal space” for the entire duration of the event.  Riders interfering with other competitors will be eliminated.  After 3 minutes, all remaining riders will be required to remove one hand from the handlebars.  After another 3 minutes, riders will be required to remove both hands from the handlebars.  If, after yet another 3 minutes, there are still remaining competitors, they will be required to take one foot off of the pedals.  The rider who can maintain their balance the longest wins.

TEAM RELAY: (60 teams maximum)

This is a new event being introduced to the CMWC.  Teams in this event must consist of four people, and at least one member of each team must be a woman.  The relay competition will be run in heats, with the top few teams in each heat advancing to the finals (the number of teams advancing per heat will depend on how many teams enter this event total).  Each team will be required to collect four parcels, with each parcel getting progressively bigger.  Parcels may include items such as small envelopes, poster tubes, cardboard boxes, and large flats.  The first rider from each team, rider #1, will be sent out from the start to pick up the smallest parcel, which must be returned to the start and handed off to the next rider.  Rider #2 will then go with the small parcel and retrieve the next parcel, then return to the start and hand off both to rider #3.  Rider #3 will then take both of the parcels and retrieve a larger parcel, hand off all three to rider #4, who will then go to pick up the final, and largest parcel and return with all four to the finish.  The parcels may be carried any way the riders see fit, as long as they are not damaged.  The team that delivers all four parcels to the finish first wins. The top three teams in the relay will recieve 100, 50, and 20 points respectively added to their overall team score.

INDIVIDUAL OVERALL POINTS:

Riders will be awarded points towards an overall title based on their performance in each of the various events.  The team relay race will not count towards the overall title.  Scoring will be based on the number of competitors in each particular event.  One point will be awarded per competitor in each event, and the top 3 finishers will each receive additional bonus points: 50 points for 1st, 30 points for 2nd, and 15 points for 3rd.  For example, If 650 people race in a particular event, the person with the slowest time will get 1 point, while the winner will receive 650 points (plus the 50 bonus points, equal to 700 points).  If 381 people race in one event, the rider finishing 27th will receive 354 points (381 - 27 = 354).  There will be a separate Overall Title for men and women.

TEAM OVERALL POINTS:

Top overall teams will also be honored.  To determine top overall teams, the individual scores of all of the team members will be added together.  The top three teams in the relay will recieve 100, 50, and 20 points respectively added to their overall team score. The team with the most points wins.  Teams must be limited to no more than 5 riders, but may be as small as a single person.  Teams can be made up of any combination of men and women, but must be predetermined before the race.  No member substitutions may be made after Friday, September 4th.

TRACK BIKE OVERALL POINTS:

Riders in the track bike events will receive points towards a Track Bike Overall title.  Scoring will be the same as in the other events: 1 point per competitor per event, with 50 bonus points for 1st, 30 points for 2nd, and 15 points for 3rd.  The points awarded to each competitor from all 3 track bike events will be added together to determine the top 3 overall track bike competitors.  These top 3 riders will be awarded 50, 30, and 15 points respectively to go towards their Individual Overall points.

OTHER RULES:

Helmets must be worn by all competitors during all of the Main events, and in the Sprint Quarterfinal, Semifinal and Final rounds.  Riding on the course without a helmet will result in disqualification.

All riders must be sober in order compete in any of the events.  Intoxicated riders will not be allowed to race.

To determine overall rankings for points titles in cases of round robin style elimination heats, all riders who do not advance in their particular heat will be scored as tied.  For example: in the Men’s Sprint Quarterfinals, 100 men participate, and 50 advance to the Semi’s.  All of those who do not advance will be scored as having tied for 51st.

Riders may not receive any outside assistance during any of the Main events.  In case of a mechanical malfunction, riders will have the option of fixing it themselves, at the side of the road, or running their bikes to the Rider Support Area.  Mechanics, bike stands tools and limited parts will be available at the Rider Support Area.  Spare wheels and bikes may be left at this area for specific riders and/or team members.  Anyone caught receiving outside assistance from anybody along the course during the main event will be disqualified.

At the Slalom Obstacle, riders are required to avoid colliding with the cardboard cutout “pedestrians”.  A 15-second time penalty will be assessed to any rider caught making even the slightest contact with the cardboard “pedestrian”.  A 30-second time penalty will be assessed to any rider caught making full contact with the “pedestrian”.  Knocking a “pedestrian” over or striking one violently or intentionally will be considered full contact.

All decisions made by official course marshalls are final and not subject to debate.
