The Most Ridiculous Race
Here’s a little tale that you can read to your kids before bedtime:

The Most Ridiculous Race

February 17th - 19th 2001

Another messenger winter racing season has begun. Where most cyclists hang up their bikes in the winter and sit back and put eating watermelon and racing back into their memories and put on a layer of fat while they watch football.

The messenger winter season started off with a Thanksgiving race in NYC that benefited the Central Kitchen or something like that. There, couriers filed into the kitchen with special turkey day food items to a stunned maitre d'. The man looked at us as we walked in and asked, "Hey are you guys on the guest list?" The couriers, equally bewildered returned, "Na, we're here to drop off food."

There is also the perennial cold weather favorite, "Stupor Bowl." Stupor Bowl held in Minneapolis for three years now is apparently by many reports a sort of Michelin Man Cup and a hell of a good time. Calgary messengers usually make a good show at this event since they dress as Michelin Men pretty much year round.

There is also some kind of race/tour series being held in Chicago every week in January. Someone had the bright idea that Chicago would be an ideal location for winter alleycatting. Known for its 40-80 mph winds and subzero temperatures dropping to as low as -50 with windchill, Chicago is a natural choice for outdoor sporting events in the quiet months of winter.

Then there is my fabled race that I was supposedly being held in Buffalo last February on President's Day weekend. I'm calling this race the "Dead President's Race." It didn't happen last year because I was typing at the computer for about 10 hours a day 7 days a week and making absolutely no money and no friends doing it. I didn't end up having the race because I looked like a writer, unclean, unshaven, smelly, hair a mess. This year I'm trying again because I promised on this site that I would.

Though Buffalo is not a city on the ocean with boardwalks and casinos, it is on a lake where there are plenty of abandoned steel plants and seagulls. Buffalo is downright horrible in February. People in Minneapolis have been known to shudder at the mere mention of Buffalo in the winter. The winter in Buffalo looks promising as they have already had 2 feet of snow. Don't worry, you can still get in to Buffalo if you're driving. For the most part the airport stays open when every other airport in the US is closed.

I'm planning a race where the rider can contemplate riding in snow, throw a bowling ball for a strike, eat lots of chicken wings and drink good Buffalo beer…Labatt's or Molson's.

There's a park where we could take a group shot, and do some downhill biking on snow. There will also be a checkpoint with some real live Buffaloes. There were some Toronto kids that were very interested last year and I'll be inviting couriers from Akron, Columbus, Rochester, Hamilton, Kingston, Cleveland and of course the regular list of cities in the Northeast region.

The coolest thing that might happen is that you will be able to witness the birth of a new courier city. Buffalo hasn't seen a bike courier since 1913 with the Western Union Telegram boys. This year a fella there is trying to open up Buffalo's first modern day bike courier company.

So think about coming to Buffalo on President's Day Weekend to slide around and get stuffed, remember to fall into the pile of snow so you don't break your neck.
