The District of Columbia Bicycle Courier Association (DCBCA) is proud to announce that Washington DC has been chosen as the host city for the 6th annual North American Cycle Courier Championships (NACCC) to be held Friday August 1 - Sunday August 3 2003. The International Federation of Bicycle Messenger Associations (IFBMA) accepted DC’s bid, presented at the 2002 NACCC in Houston. This will be the second major courier championship that Washington DC will host. The DCBCA also organized the NACCC’s parent event, the Cycle Messenger World Championships, in 1998. The NACCC will attract hundreds of bicycle couriers from across North America, all vying for the bragging rights of being the fastest messenger on the continent.
The two day race will be held on the Grand Prix course in the shadows of RFK Stadium. The race, which is free to spectators, will test each bicycle courier’s cycling, navigational, and organizational skills to their fullest extent. The race course, built like a mini city, will have dozens of checkpoints across a map of twisting, turning, and intersecting streets. Courier racers qualifying on Saturday will take around an hour to complete a manifest of deliveries as fast as they can while keeping their wits. With this fast paced action, only the top messengers will advance to a grueling 4-mainfest finals on Sunday.
Throughout the championship weekend, the DCBCA and the IFBMA will host discussions on safety and labor issues in the bicycle courier industry. The DCBCA is one of several local organizations working on DC’s “Safe Streets” program designed to foster better education and cooperation amongst all of the users of DC’s streets. It has also developed the “minimum industry standards” proposal designed to help give bicycle couriers a chance to make a fairer and safer living.
While messenger-run organizations like the DCBCA and IFBMA have helped make the courier industry more professional, the bicycle courier community still sticks closely to its artistic and progressive roots. The weekend will begin Friday night with an opening ceremony featuring a messenger art show and poetry reading.
