Cycle Messenger World Championship -- Philadelphia
Philadelphia, - The messenger communities of Philadelphia and
Boston have joined together to present the world the Eighth Annual Cycle
Messenger World Championship in the city of Brotherly Love-- Philadelphia.
This international event will take place over the Labor Day Weekend of
September 1st through the 4th, 2000. On that weekend anywhere between
500 and 800 competitors from 25 different countries will converge on Philadelphia
to compete for a variety of world champion titles.
Since 1993, the CMWC has gathered in Berlin, London, Toronto, San Francisco,
Barcelona, Washington DC and Zurich. The messengers come to compete
in one of the most unique cycling events in the world. They will
vie for the title of Fastest Messenger in the World as well as other
titles. Among those are Cargo Bike champion, BMX trials and bunny
hop, Track Bike skids and stands, and Sprints. Racers travel from
points as far away as Tokyo and Australia. They also come from countries
as unlikely as the Eastern Bloc (maybe say "Hungary" instead of "Eastern
Bloc" since we do have some people coming from Hungary) countries and Scandanavia.
These couriers long used to the hills of Sydney, the cold of Helsinki or
the madness of London traffic, will come and show their skills and unique
adapatations that have made them the best couriers in the world.
The CMWC is much more than a race. There will also be a group
ride the eve of the championships that in 1996, at the CMWC San Francisco,
attracted some 3,000 riders. From there messengers will converge
on a "World Welcome Party." Once competitions begin there will be a plaza
where various bike messenger paraphenalia and bike equipment will available
for sale. Before the event there will also be a gallery of messenger
art that will be open to the public.
We invite you to join us at the 2000 Cycle Messenger World Championships
on September 1-4 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There you will see
for yourself the professionals that love their job so much, they turned
it into a sport.
