For Immediate Release City Bikes RFK Criterium Bicycle Race
Washington DC’s only bicycle race of 2005. Hub Racing is proud to present the City Bikes RFK Criterium Bicycle Race that will take place on Sunday, August 14th on the Grand Prix Race Course at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. Some of the Nation’s best bicycle racers will be competing on this exciting course in the shadow of historic RFK Stadium. The 3rd Annual City Bikes RFK Criterium Bicycle Race is Washington DC’s only bike race of 2005. The top racers at the event will be riding at close to 30 miles per hour on this extremely fast course. In a criterium bicycle race, racers complete many laps of a short race course (1.7 miles per lap at RFK), so fans get the chance to watch the entire race unfold in front of them. The featured race of the day, featuring both professional and top ranked amateur women, runs from 2:30 until 4:00 PM, during which spectators and fans will be given the chance to win prizes such as Cannondale bicycles and Timbuk2 messenger bags. Bike races will take place beginning at 8am with the lower and age group categories. Fans may come and spectate all of the races for free and the grass hill along the finish line is perfect for picnics. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association will host the “WABA Members Fun Ride” between races. Members of WABA will get a chance to ride the RFK Grand Prix Race Course led around by the bicyclists from DC Courier. WABA has developed the “Confident City Cycling” class and the “Safe Streets” program. The staff Washington Area Bicyclist Association will also fill their now traditional role by joining the Virginia Culinary Company and the Asylum Bar and Lounge in serving up food for the racers at the “WABA Grill”. WABA membership is opened to anyone interested in making cycling better in Washington DC. The City Bikes RFK Criterium Bicycle Race benefits the Doug Gordon Memorial Easter Seals Fund. Portions of sponsorship and of racer’s registration are being donated to the fund, and the racers coming to compete at this event have been very generous, making donations as they registered. Several sponsors of the race are matching these donations. The Doug Gordon Memorial Fund is a scholarship program that sends children with disabilities to the Easter Seals Sno-Mo Camp Program. Representatives of the Doug Gordon Memorial Fund will be at the City Bikes RFK Criterium to promote Easter Seals and accept donations as well. Hub Racing, the organizer of the City Bikes RFK Criterium, is a Washington DC based USA Cycling Club featuring The “Hub Racing / DC Courier Women’s Elite Team” that recently took 3rd place at the Shaklee Superweek Women's Pro Tour in Wisconsin and took first place at the Grand Prix of Bethesda earlier this year. The City Bikes RFK Criterium’s title sponsor, City Bikes of Washington DC, is a full service bicycle shop with locations in Adams Morgan DC and Chevy Chase MD.
