SWISS ALLEYCAT
CHAMPIONSHIPS
ZURICH JULY 25TH 1997
 from Chris"Tractor"Tavenner

The Race was held on a Friday evening in weather that was unpredictable to say the least.
The forcast called for rain and wind, but the clouds held their drops while the riders gathered in the shelter of the Tunnel STR. bike path. This location is unique not only because of the bike path, but the walls inside are entierly covered with art from Zurichs best graffetti and taggers. The week before the race found everyone nervous and anxious, preparing their bikes and replacing old parts for new in an attempt to have the slightest advantage and possibly win the first prize plane ticket. The racers made their last minute adjustments, testing brakes, and pumping more air into tires, until finally
the money was paid and instructions were given.
The format had the riders start "le Mans" style with the riders split into two groups. One group received a manifest with six checkpoints while the others were given seven, at the half each would return to receive the other manifest making a total of thirteen checkpoints in all. The bikes were
placed at the top of a large flight of stairs and when the tension was just right they were given the green light to start. Some bolted for their bikes while others took their time checking the mapbooks for the fastest route through town. Of course mother nature showed no mercy as, like clockwork, it started to rain.
The course was difficult even for the most vetran couriers making map books every bit an essential part of the race. Checkpoints were located all through town with with some intersecting routes for each group. One of the first difficulties was at the "Banhoff Tieffenbrunnen" where
the clue had been recently covered by a poster advert. Serveral riders searched in vain until Victor Badran tore down the poster to reveal the clue.
The other checkpoints forced riders through wet cobblestoned climbs such as on "Russen weg" and the"Gabler str" to reach "J.Hefti weg". One checkpoint located on the fifth level of the "Letzipark" parking garage saw crashes claim a few riders as they had to decend the wet, grease covered spiral for the five floors. Hannes Würgler was the only serious injury when he was struck by a car while crossing the "Hard Bruge" bridge, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance where they found cracked vertebre, but is now recovering well. This reminded everyone of the dangers involved in Alley Cat racing.
At the halfway point,Nüüt Schück came first suprising everyone as he had to complete the longer route first. He was very closly followed by Victor Badran who was on the same
route and only seconds behind. Next came a steady flood of racers from both routes, some speeding off while others carfully checked manifest and map. By this point we had already seen many riders drop out for reasons from mechanical to physical, with the first to drop being Flo Streit
after flatting his back wheel only two minutes into the race.
The Finish saw a reverse of the half with Badran getting the break in traffic and entering the tunnel first closley followed by Schück. Next came two more riders who came across at the same
time, In a show of team work Gian Luca and Böbi Blasser finished three minutes from the leaders, followed by Marcel Bircher at eight minutes.
After race party was held at the GOLD SPRINT bar where the prizes where given and beer was drank, while music was provided by Lukas Keller. Thanks to our voluteers Sami, Wendy
Lars, and Sacha, for making a safe race and providing on the road  radio reports.
