Washington DC

 July 15th 2000

33 brave men and women from as far and wide as Baltimore and Richmond, came to DC to compete in the 4th annual Unofficial DC East Coast North American World Fixed Gear Courier Championships.

As in the past, no hand brakes or coaster brakes were permitted and the checkpoints were the various traffic circles around DC.  At each circle riders had to check in by getting their manifests signed, do a lap of the circle and then check out with another signature.  The race started at Dupont Circle, visited 6 Circles and a Square, and covered just about 8 miles.  With an extremely brutal finish up 15th street, the final hill claimed a number of victims, and spectators jeered the broken riders as they walked across the finish line.

Morgan from DC won the race in almost exactly 24 minutes, and while I tried to figure out what his average speed was, the math was overwhelming.  Let's just say he was going really fast.  Laura C. took the women's race only a few minutes back of the lead and well ahead of the majority of men.

The party was at the Sky Palace and the side events took place in the alley out back.  This was a new venue for our skid competition, but like before, we were dealing with plenty of debris and potholes, and the longest skids were getting all the way around the corner at the end of the alley.  Just to make sure the police had something to do, a very nude Eric Roman won the skid on a borrowed bike (Spencer was later seen in elbow length rubber gloves disinfecting his stem and saddle).  Jill from Richmond was one of only a handful of riders to make it around the turn and was clearly the hands down lady skidder of the day.

This year the track stand was set to music instead of against the clock, kind of like musical chairs.  The deal was that riders had to balance in place, and after each song ended they had to remove a limb from their bikes.  First one hand, then the other, and finally one foot as well.  The songs started short and got longer, and by the time Back in Black was winding down, there were only 4 people left standing, and when that one foot came out, everyone started falling over.  Somehow I guess I just happened to fall over the slowest.  Hooray for me!  Jessica from Baltimore took top track stand honors among the ladies, staying verticle well into the AC/DC segment of the competition when she found herself rockin' out a little too hard to a wicked guitar solo and lost her concentration.

Miraculously enough, there were no accidents, arrests or injuries and everybody walked away happy and healthy.  The lucky winners also took home some goodies from the likes of Swobo, Timbuk2 and Bailey Works, with the top prizes being a $100 tattoo gift certificate from Port Town Tattoos and a super-sweet Phil Wood bottom bracket with the special tools included (nice).  It was ladies choice between the bb and the tattoo and Laura opted for the Phil Wood  (can you blame her?).  Morgan was happy for the chance to add to his skin art collection, as he has plenty of fresh flesh left to cover.

No brakes, No gears, No problem.
